Press Releases & Recognition

Cool Employers – The Plain Dealer, December 14, 2005

Would you trust a start-up architectural firm to design your hospital? You might if the firm was Cleveland-based Perspectus Architecture.

When Larry Fischer and Bill Ayars left the ranks of Collins Gordon Bostwick Architects to launch their own firm in 2001, they took 35 years of collective experience and a track record of success with them. And clients followed. Perspectus has handled projects for such renowned research and healthcare organizations as Case Western Reserve University, The Cleveland Clinic, and The Ohio State University Medical Center. With six registered architects and 12 staff members on the payroll, Fischer and Ayars have fewer co-workers than they did before setting out on their own, but they still manage to deliver an expansive array of services.

“We provide project design leadership,” Fischer says, summing up his company’s line of work. From the creation of construction documents to the administration of the construction itself, Perspectus strives to meet all of its clients’ architectural needs. “We even plan out dedication ceremonies,” Fischer adds with a laugh.

Perspectus works hard to take care of its clients, but the firm works equally hard to take care of its employees. “We offer a full array of benefits comparable to any large institution,” Fischer says. Vacation time, sick days, a savings plan, and health insurance are all a part of the compensation package. The firm provides a number of other persk as well, though.

“We have an employee education plan,” Fischer says. The firm sends staff members to conferences and seminars to help them stay informed on the latest industry trends and to learn new areas of specialization.

Flexibility is another perk. “We tend to be goal-oriented where we’re not punching the clock,” Fischer says. If an employee wants to work on a Saturday or Sunday in order to take off a Tuesday or Wednesday, that’s perfectly fine with the company’s founders.

Another advantage of working for Perspectus is the opportunity to travel. In addition to its local clientele, the firm also does work for a number of national organizations. “CVS is a client,” Fischer says. “They hire us to facilitate zoning issues at different stores throughout the U.S. One week we might have an architect in Augusta, Maine, the next week in Augusta, Georgia.”

As great as it may be to travel, Fischer says there’s still no place like the corner of Cleveland that Perspectus calls home. “Being located on Shaker Square is an incredible environment.” With amenities such as restaurants and shops and a movie theatre, the Square offers a wealth of entertainment, as well as convenience. We have three staff that ride the Rapid regularly to work.”
